(NEW) M-1840 SPRINGFIELD CONVERSION MUSKET

Originally designated the M-1835 Springfield, this musket underwent extensive modification and improvement prior to ultimate production as the M-1840. It was the United States’ last flintlock musket and saw extensive used during the Mexican War. Over 30,000 were produced. Prior to the Civil War, the vast majority of the remaining M-1840 muskets were converted to percussion. Numerous methods were used, but one of the most commonly performed was the “Belgian-Style” (or “Cone-Type”) conversion. The process involved cutting off the pan and filling it with brass, installing a percussion hammer, and tapping a cone into the barrel at the breach. Our Reproduction Our reproduction M-1840 Springfield “Belgian-Style” Conversion Musket is faithful to the original in design and functionality. It features a .69 caliber barrel, hardwood stock, and bright finish. The “Belgian-Style” conversion is sure to make this musket stand out in a stack. The weapon requires no defarbing, is properly marked, and even has a correct two-piece nose-cap with brass sight. Like all of our muskets, it is compatible with commonly available parts, comes with a limited warranty, and has been proofed for safety. A bayonet is available for this musket. Overall Length: 58 inches Weight: 9 pounds (approx.) Bore: Smoothbore Caliber: .69 cal. M-1842 Springfield Musket

The M-1842 Springfield was the first percussion musket produced by the US national armories and the last regulation smoothbore. During the ten years that they were manufactured, more than 275,000 were produced. Except for the lock and firing system, the musket was almost identical to the earlier M-1840 Springfield. They were produced by the Springfield and Harper’s Ferry armories as well as by private contractors. The arms produced at Springfield and Harper’s Ferry featured interchangeable parts. The M-1842 saw service during the Mexican War and was used extensively by both Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. Our Reproduction Our M-1842 Springfield musket is an accurate reproduction of this important arm. It features a .69 caliber smoothbore barrel, hardwood stock, two-piece nose-cap with brass sight, and a bright finish. Living historians will appreciate that it requires no defarbing and has period markings. Because our reproduction has an 1846 date, it is suitable for both Mexican War and Civil War re-enactors. Like all of our muskets, it comes with a limited warranty. Bayonets are available for purchase with the musket.

In the 1850’s South Carolina contracted with William Glaze of the Palmetto Armory to produce Model 1842s for state use. Approximately 6,000 were manufactured.
