Brass Sundial with Magnetic Compass

This is a beautiful solid brass antique reproduction of a sundial with an internal magnetic compass. The top of the sundial is hinged and a curved scale is used to set your local latitude angle. The magnetic compass allows the sundial to be oriented North. The compass features a needle lift mechanism to protect the compass's jeweled bearing when being transported. There are three adjustable legs that are used to precisely level the sundial. The sun's shadow cast by the sundial's vane marks the local time. The top of the sundial can lay down flat, and both the latitude scale and the sundial vane are hinged to lay flat for compact storage. The sundial measures 4 1/2 inches (11.4 cm) tall, 2 inches (5.1 cm) tall when collapsed, the body of the compass is 2 7/8 inches (7.3 cm) in diameter, and the sundial weighs 14 ounces (397 grams). The sundial compass is available in polished brass, imported.

The Five-inch Brass Rack Sextant has an adjustment knob to allow fine adjustment of the inclination angle. Both mirrors are fully adjustable and there are six swing-arm filters. A built-in magnifier can be swung into position to assist in reading the vernier scale. The brass reproduction sextants are quality made and are fully functional, but are not intended for navigation. Transit and Alidade

Used on Ships as well as Surveyors would align the compass and use this item to measure both vertical and horizontal angles for extremely accurate measurements while developing their topographical maps or finding there way across the oceans. The telegraphic sights equipped on the alidade would allow the user a truer line with more precise dimensions then the previous models of this type. This is a reproduction of an early THEODOLITE, ALIDADE TRANSIT.  This is a copy and not suitable for actual use in surveying. The instrument is made of brass with a nice bronze finish to give it the appearance of patina. The telescope measures 5 1/2 inches extended and 4 ½ inches when adjusted all the way in. The telescope appears to my old eyes to be about 10 power. There is a bubble level mounted on the top of the scope. The telescope is mounted on a pivot with a calibrated protractor. This is adjusted by loosening a knurled knob which allows the telescope to be adjusted to different elevations. Beneath this is a magnetic compass. The compass has a lever on one side that allows the needle to be locked when the instrument is transported. The base of the instrument has three adjustment screws with knurled knobs for adjusting the instrument level. Not intended for actual use, imported.
